Do you know what vegetables are in season this spring?  Well, here are a few picks for the season…

Spinach

Strawberries

New Potatoes

Green Beans

Peas

Cherries

We can think of a few opportunities to sprinkle these fresh vegetables into flavorful dishes!  How about a spinach & leafy green salad with sliced strawberries and walnuts with raspberry vinaigrette? Or green beans tossed in with roasted potatoes and a green bean casserole.  What kind of dish could you make with a spring veggie?

Trends in Gardening

Times are changing…or perhaps just cycling back to a time that once was.  Gardens and community gardens are bringing more people together.  Edible (or vegetable) gardens in particular can spark a sense of unity and camaraderie for a neighborhood, while promoting physical activity and increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Brentwood Community Garden

Residents in the Brentwood community of Northwest Jacksonville are excited about the start of a garden in their community.  Working with the War on Poverty Florida, members of the Brentwood Community Council are embarking on a historic endeavor to bring neighbors of all ages together for a beneficial and healthy project.

The ‘official’ groundbreaking for the garden was held April 18, 2009, and clean up is under way.  Stay tuned for more information as this garden unfolds…
